If you are looking for fashion sketching books for beginners, you probably are in the phase of learning fashion sketches.
Yes, there are tons of books and materials out there. The problem is not the options these days, it’s about narrowing down to the one that gives you the best results.
And this is why I brought you 7 fashion sketching books for beginners that really work even if you have no sketching experience.
When I was in fashion college, I got the opportunity of this huge library with every fashion book that you can imagine. For most of my college days, I was sitting in the library absorbing as much fashion design knowledge as I can.
Especially fashion sketching is my favorite subject and I was so hungry to go through every single book on that topic.
Out of all books, the ones that I’m going to recommend are the ones that worked great for me and I get to buy a copy of these for my own reference.
P.S Some are affiliate links, meaning I get a small commission when you buy any of these books with my link at no cost to you. But the thing is, I assure you that the information and the products that I share here are from my own experience and true to my knowledge.
So the first book is about the basics of fashion sketching.
Fashion Sketching Books #1 Fashion Sketchbook by Bina Abling
If I had to pick one to learn complete fashion sketching, that would be Bina Abling’s books. Even most fashion colleges use her books as references and textbooks for fashion design students. Her books are a must for anyone who is in the fashion field.
My 2 of her favorite books are fashion sketchbook and the Fashion flats.
Fashion Sketching Books #2 9 heads by Nancy Reigelman
I don’t know anything about Nancy Reigelman until I’m done with college and I was working under a designer. I was so grateful that I got a chance to attend her fashion sketching classes and she is a real deal. I can’t even explain how resourceful she was and she even wrote a book called 9 heads.
Her quality of the high fashion sketches is sooooo cool.
Fashion Sketching Book #3 Moda marfy
After you learned the basics of fashion sketching, it’s really important to keep up with the practice. And the best way to practice is recreating other people’s sketches. I found it’s really helpful when you try to copy other famous illustrator sketches.
It helped me understand different techniques, variations, depths, and other details that I might miss if I do it on my own. However, I only recommend recreating only when you are in the learning stage. When you got the hang of it, move on to your own.
This is where Moda Marfy’s books come in handy. A full book of fashion sketches heaven. They are so beautifully drawn and you can practice by looking at them. (Although the purpose of this book is entirely different to bring designs from runway).
Fashion Sketching Book #4 Creativity in fashion design
I mentioned this book ton of times in my trainings, in my blog posts, and on social media because this book deserves it.
This is actually a workbook of fashion designs, that pushes you to level up your skills with fun projects. Working on these projects and following this book is one of my best experiences.
Fashion templates are the great foundation for any fashion sketch. How good your fashion sketch depends on how good your croquis is. Most people try to learn fashion figures first but that’s the hard part of fashion sketching and they feel terrible and give up.
But the thing is, you can use fashion templates when you are starting out and when you get hang of it and build that confidence, you can slowly move into learning the fashion figures.
I got a list of Fashion figure templates here but one of my favorites is Zoe Hong templates. Who doesn’t love Zoe Hong. She is teaching fashion sketches on Youtube for a decade and she was so much fun. If you don’t know her yet, You are missing a lot.
Recently, I found this shop on creativemarket and it has such a great collection of fashion sketching templates.
Of course, you need a sketchbook to draw your awesome sketches right? And fashionary nailed it. One of my favorite Fashion stationery products. I get to buy every single product that they put out there.
That’s the wrap of the fashion sketching books for beginners, You can learn from all of these places or if you want to learn everything in one place, I created a FREE Fashion sketching course which you can check out here.
